The Salvation Army: Mission Statement + Vision

The Salvation Army is a Christian-based charitable organization with a worldwide reach. Their mission is “to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in his name without discrimination.” They help anyone who needs it, regardless of religious affiliation.

History of The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army was founded in 1865 in the Blind Beggar Pub in London. William and Catherine Booth, the founders, began helping the poor and disadvantaged members of their local community while preaching to large crowds about their Christian faith.

Originally called The Christian Mission, the organization was renamed in 1878 to its present name, reflecting its members’ complete dedication to the cause. The Salvation Army’s work was brought overseas in 1879, with its first American venture taking place in Philadelphia.

And the rest is history! Today, The Salvation Army operates in 132 countries worldwide, helping as many people in need as possible.
